What is market structure?

Market structure is the pattern of swing highs and swing lows that price forms, used to describe whether a market is trending up, trending down, or ranging.

Swing highs and swing lows

A swing high is a peak that has lower prices on both sides of it. A swing low is a trough with higher prices on both sides. Connect these turning points and you get the market's structure.

The classic reading, which goes back to Dow Theory, is simple. Higher highs and higher lows describe an uptrend. Lower highs and lower lows describe a downtrend. When neither pattern holds, the market is often described as ranging.

Break of structure and change of character

Smart money concepts add two labels. A break of structure (BOS) is when price pushes beyond the last swing point in the direction of the current trend, which traders read as the trend continuing. A change of character (CHoCH) is when price breaks the last swing point against the current trend (for example, below the last higher low in an uptrend), which some traders treat as an early hint that the trend may be changing.

These are descriptions of what already happened on the chart, not forecasts. Structure also depends on the timeframe: a market can be in an uptrend on the daily chart while forming a downtrend on the 15-minute chart.

Frequently asked questions

Why start with market structure?

Because most other concepts, including order blocks and liquidity, are read in the context of structure. It gives you a consistent way to describe what the market is doing.

Which timeframe should I use?

There is no single right answer. Many students begin on higher timeframes such as the daily or 4-hour, where structure is easier to see, then look at lower ones for more detail.

Does a break of structure confirm a trend?

No. Breaks can fail and price can return inside the previous range. Structure describes what price has done; it does not promise what it will do next.
